Our next stop on our Passport to Adventure summer camp is the continent of Europe!
Our camper’s learned about European artist Henri Matisse!
Students listened to the stories Henri’s Scissors and Matisse’s Garden ahead of our lesson to learn more about the life and work of Matisse. On Friday we read, When Pigasso Met Mootisse, by Nina Laden. The book is based on the relationship of Picasso and Matisse. We discussed Matisse’s life and his art processes. Later in his life he created beautiful and vibrant cut-paper collages.
Following the story and discussion, we dove right into our art lesson “Drawing with Scissors Cut Paper Collage”. Student’s were asked to make a variety of decisions for planning their artwork. First, they choose colors that they would use, I asked them to be mindful of how the colors will interact with each other and their background. They also were asked to think about making both geometric and organic shapes. The most challenging concept of this lesson was asking the students to “draw” with their scissors, meaning no pencils. I asked the campers to visualize a shape on their paper and follow that visualization with their scissors. Finally, they were asked to layer their collage and try to make interesting designs with both the positive and negative space of their shapes.
The lesson was a thoughtful exploration of color theory (choosing colors and placing them thoughtfully in design), positive and negative space (using the colors as positive space and black background as negative), design (layout and choosing where to layer and place shapes), geometric and organic shapes, and fine motor skills (cutting). Mrs. Yoder, our art teacher, was so impressed with how our camper’s interpreted the lesson and created their own bold, unique, colorful collages!
