Montessori and STEM – The Perfect Match!
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Maria Montessori, the founder of the Montessori Education movement, was a scientist. In fact, she was the first licensed female medical doctor in all of Italy. Maria insisted that children not only could benefit from science classes, but that science education was essential to developing an independent, well-rounded life. For more that one hundred years, Montessori education has meant a STEM based education; even the youngest Montessori students have always been exposed to hands-on science and mathematics.
Our weekly STEM classes focus on Technology and Engineering skills. In Technology lessons students ages 3 – grade 6 learn coding through manipulatives and apps. Older students learn keyboarding skills, word processing, and how to use the Internet for research. Engineering lessons are about building structures, creativity, and problem solving skills.
One of our favorite activities is our code and go mouse. Students have the mouse navigate a maze to get the cheese.
