On Monday we started our study of Australia creating booklets, studying Australian animals and Australian inspired art. We read wonderful books and listened to tranquil sounds of Australian didgeridoo. The didgeridoo is a simple wind instrument. The didgeridoo was developed by Indigenous Australians of northern Australia. We also made wonderful aboriginal dot paintings using q-tips for paint brushes featuring some of Australia’s native animals.
On Tuesday we made fairy bread after reading the poem Fairy Bread by Australian poet, Robert Louis Stevenson, that inspired the tasty Australian treat:
Come up here, O dusty feet!
Here is fairy bread to eat.
Here in my retiring room,
Children, you may dine
On the golden smell of broom
And the shade of pine;
And when you have eaten well,
Fairy stories hear and tell.
On Wednesday we had Australian themed show and tell! Our campers painted sweet koala portraits on paper plates. We also made colorful snakes with paper plates using a spiral cutting design.
On Thursday we made platypuses on craft paper and practiced our coloring and cutting skills. In the afternoon we had a fun activity in the kitchen creating koala food sculptures with veggies from Mrs. Yoder’s garden.
Friday we created really sweet turtle finger puppets!
