The Brookeside Montessori students in the Elementary program have been studying Botany.
Recent lessons have them learning about what plants need to survive and how our food is grown. The song “Dirt Made My Lunch” tells about how a salad, sandwich and glass of milk start with the plants grown in the earth.
On Earth Day students learned another important fact that the soil is a filter for our drinking water. Using a recycled plastic bottle, small rocks, and soil the students built a filter to replicate what the Earth does. They were amazed as a cup of dirty water appeared much clearer after passing through the layers.
Brookeside’s child-centered educational environment provides activities and a Pennsylvania state approved curriculum appropriate to each child’s developmental stage. The integrated curricula are guided by a highly trained staff, who are aware of the needs of the individual child.
