It is hard to believe that this was our last week at camp.

Our time was coming to an end but the fun certainly did not! This week during our “Reading Rocks!” adventure, our campers got to explore the land down under while we focused on books by Australian author Mem Fox.

We began the week by indulging in the sweet, gooey, and chocolate coated signature Australian dessert: the Tasmanian Treat. Our taste buds were very pleased to say the least! We decorated simple materials such as plates and bowls to create our own version of the hat that Mem Fox brings to life in her story “The Magic Hat“. The hats certainly brought our classroom to life too, as the campers imagined that they were their favorite animals. We also learned about the geography and culture of Australia and compared it to our own, using books like “Koala Lou” and “Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge“. One of our most memorable projects of the week was making telescopes to see different constellations and stars. The campers shared memories of star gazing with family members and visiting the planetarium.

The last day of camp was simply bittersweet. The campers spent it making cow puppets to represent Mem Fox’s popular story “A Particular Cow” and enjoying some ice cream from our favorite local place, Longacres Dairy. After a quick reflection on the summer, campers said goodbye to their good friends at Brookeside…until next time! Please enjoy the rest of the summer and hope to see you soon. Keep on reading!
