Science, Geography and Sensorial Exploration were the plan for the day on our first FUN FRIDAY of the new school year!
Brookeside Montessori Primary Half Day class used our outdoor classroom today, for some good old-fashioned messy fun! Donning our art smocks, we used our hands to manipulate dough, shaving cream, dirt and water to explore the science concepts of solid vs. liquid and land vs. water! We also explored color mixing, textural sensations, and the joy of expression to describe the results!
Some of the lessons included:
- mixing both solids (playdoh) and liquids (food dyes) to create secondary colors from primary colors
- drawing using shaving cream, flour, salt, or sand
- combining dirt (land) with water to create mud AND build mudpies, mud pancakes and mud birthday cakes with stick candles!
- using our noses to identify familiar smells such as coffee, cinnamon, vanilla and more.
These lessons capped a week of indoor sensory activities which also included sound matching and identification, instrument exploration, and color, shape and size exploration.
At the close of the day, students used their explorations to sort photos into categories expressing which of their senses they would use to interact with each photo. (EX. popcorn–smell and taste!)
Brookeside’s child-centered educational environment provides activities and a Pennsylvania state approved curriculum appropriate to each child’s developmental stage. The integrated curricula are guided by a highly trained staff, who are aware of the needs of the individual child.
Enrollment is ongoing as space is available.
